- Subject: Digital Delay Circuit Ideas?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I'm designing a clock to be driven by my local frequency standard. My goal is
- to be able to set the second mark to better than 1 millisecond (and I hope
- eventually much better than that).
-
- To do this, I need to build a variable delay that I can use to slew the
- seconds marker. Actually, I'll need a couple of delays, starting at a higher
- frequency for fine adjustment, and finally running at a lower one for course
- adjust. Obviously, for stability reasons I want to do this digitally and not
- with some sort of analog delay.
-
- Any suggestions on CMOS devices (probably a presettable counter?) that
- would work well here? The larger the count range in a single chip, the
- better.
-
- Thanks...

-
- I have come across some electronic textbooks that I think are
- really pretty special. If you are studying for an amateur license
- upgrade, or for a commercial radio license (like I am) and want to
- really get a good understanding of electronics without an engineering
- degree, you may want to give these books a look.
- There are a series of nine books, all based on a military
- electronic training course, which have been revamped completely for a
- non-military audience. These books take you from zero to quite
- proficient in each subject area with no fuss. The pace is fast enough
- to keep the more knowledgable interested, but not so fast that you are
- assumed to know anything that is not in the book.
- Titles in the series include:
- Solid state devices
- Amplfiers
- Propagation, transmission lines and antennas (my favorite)
- Microwave
- Wave-generation circuts, etc. etc.
- Cost is $10.95 for each book plus shipping.
- Order from Lathrop Publications, Box 207, Upper Marlboro, MD
- 20773.
- He has ads in the most recent CQ and other ham magazines.

- given the technophobic luddites and chicken littles that seem to pervade
- society today, you can probably find more than a few people that are willing
- to subscribe to the idea that they are being killed by incidental RF energy
- exposure.
-
- one local case, has people that moved next to Patrick AFB raising cain over
- the Air Traffic Control radar and the military radars there causing them to
- suffer diseases because they know they're being exposed since they can hear
- the buzz on the radio....and it's not like they just plopped those down on the
- base last month.....
-
- we also have the folks upset over the new doppler radars being installed by
- the US NWS - montel williams had a show that sensationalized the "dangers of
- the NEXRAD systems" - improved severe weather detection notwithstanding.
-
- they don't want to be exposed to radio waves AT ALL! of course natural radio
- is OK because it's a natural occurance rather than a synthetic man-made radio
- wave. (same logic that says a chlorine atom comes in 2 flavors - "organic" and
- "ionic"...jeez some folks need to take high school chem for the first time..)
-
- a defense is to show that even if there is an effect, it's potential is small
- compared to the greater good of being able to call for the fire department or
- police that can more quickly respond due to radio dispatching....especially
- when they arrive on a scene and determine they either need more or less help
- and can notify the other units directly....
-
- this can be extended to personal communications like cell radiophones and
- such.

-
- Loomis' experiments were actually rather well documented, given the almost
- pseudo-science style of these early attempts at wireless communications.
- Loomis received a patent for his system, and tried to raise money to implement
- a commercial wireless network. His New York backers were wiped out in one of
- the frequent financial "panics" of the 19th century.
-
- His patent was #129,971
-
- His experiments were mentioned in Scientific American, Feb. 16, 1878;
- Feb. 15, 1879; and Feb 22, 1879.
-
- He died in 1886.
-
- Our Field Day group operates from a site about 1/2 mile from the site Loomis
- used in the late 1860s and early 1870s (We're on the same ridge, one `peak'
- (or what passes for a peak in the Blue Ridge) south of his site).

- David Checkett WG0Y asks about automated/computerized
- transmissions on 154.46 MHz.
-
- Karl Beckman WA8NVW replies that the freq 154.46375 is
- allocated primarily for electric utility one-way
- communications for load control.
-
- My FCC 90.63 suggests that 154.45625 MHz is also a likely prospect.
-
- BOTH freqs are shared with Local Govt, Petroleum, Forest Products, Special
- Industrial, Business and Manufacturer Radio Services, so power companies
- are not necessarily the only source of this traffic. I suspect that Karl
- is on target with the most likely user. 154.46375 can be used up to 300w,
- 154.45625 is limited to 20 watts fixed, or 2 watts mobile.

- That argument doesn't wash. Kilocycle is MORE descriptive than kilohertz -- the

- The fact is that kc and Mc were just as well understood without the "/s" as
